Making Ribbon Skirts / Shirts Workshop

May 23, 2023 @ 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm

As part of our “Bringing the Heartbeat and Ceremony Alive” workshops, we are offering a Ribbon Skirt making activity. A goal of the Muskoka Indigenous Friendship Centre in 2023 is to help community members start to build those healing bundles. This activity is being provided for the next few weeks in order to help as many people as possible finish their creations before June 20–our Drum Birthing Day and National Indigenous Day (June 21).

Pre-registration is required to get access to these 12 free Ribbon Skirt kits. However, if you would like to purchase your own material and ribbons, you are still welcome to come and join us over the next few weeks to assemble yours as well. Items you will need to supply include:

  • 2 1/2 metres 100% cotton material
  • 2 metres elastic for the waistband
  • 4 colours of 1 1/2 inch (38cm) satin ribbon, 2 1/2 metres each

Our goal is to provide community members an opportunity to add some regalia to their wardrobe. We are still working on the lists for what is needed to provide some Ribbon Shirts as well–stay tuned.

This workshop is made possible by a grant from The Anglican Foundation of Canada in its support of Indigenous led healing initiatives.
